MAITE MOSCOSO

Maite Moscoso.

While the Longwood (Longwood, Fla.) soph doesn’t quite have the national reputation of, say, a Tyler Sorensen or Trevor Barron, Maite Moscoso has come a long way this year into establishing herself as a national-class racewalker and has begun to elevate herself among the girls’ greats in the sport.

Florida generally hasn’t been a hotbed for the discipline, but Moscoso rewrote state records in every event she entered this year, and by the end of the summer led the nation at 1500 meters (6:45.80), 3000 (14:21.70), and 10000 (53:11.79), and was US#2 at 5000 (25:43.0).  The 1500 and 3k times are sophomore class records and move her to #4 and #5 on the respective all-time lists, according to Michael Roth at hsrw.net.  Her 10k was also #9 all-time.  Not since 2006 has any girl walked so fast.

Moscoso’s victories included titles at the USATF Juniors and both USATF and AAU Junior Olympics.  She also made Team USA for the Pan American Cup of Junior Racewalking, where she placed 17th in a very tough field.  With two more years to go, Moscoso has a real chance to set national records for most, if not all the racewalking distances.
